Jonathan Haidt writes The book, The Anxious Generation, an evidence based book looking at the effects of the current trends of childhood and how it is rewiring brains. It is very helpful to understand how all of our lives have changed very quickly over the last 15 years.

Bowling Alone by Robert Putnam is an important work that has stood the test of time–and  now has a new edition with a chapter on the impact of social media and the internet.

Week 4

The pdf of the slides from March 11 class are here.

Carolyn just completed a course:  “Guard to Guide: Transform your loneliness from guard dog to guide dog”. It looks at the “pro-symptom” position concept that we looked at week 3. It will eventually be available as a mini course for $23.00 but the introductory price is $7.00 (or more–it’s a “pay what you want” course) If you want to spend more time with the concepts of week 3, check it out!

Carolyn read from Mark 12 (The Message)

Carolyn referred to several thought leaders to develop emotional literacy:

Susan David wrote a book on Emotional Agility, and she gave a helpful TED talk as well.

Brené Brown writes a book Atlas of the Heart that explains emotions for those that are trying to increase their emotional vocabulary.

Dr. Marc Brackett write a book Permission to Feel which has a 5 step program to be mindful of emotion which I find really helpful. There are lots of videos and podcasts he is on. I remember listening to the one on Unlocking us with Brené Brown.

Think about drawing a Life timeliness of loneliness–the above video walks you through how I did my own.

Grab a piece of paper–longer in width than tall, draw a line across it and start thinking about your life–when you have felt more connected and when you have experienced loneliness.

A woman lonely with people all around her.

Lost Connections

There was a mystery haunting award-winning investigative journalist Johann Hari. He was thirty-nine years old, and almost every year he had been alive, depression and anxiety had increased in Britain and across the Western world. Why?

The Anxious Generation

After more than a decade of stability or improvement, the mental health of adolescents plunged in the early 2010s. Rates of depression, anxiety, self-harm, and suicide rose sharply, more than doubling on many measures. Why?

In
The Anxious Generation, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt lays out the facts about the epidemic of teen mental illness that hit many countries at the same time.
